Greece is the word in Europe today as the leaders of the Eurozone countries have agreed to bail out the government of Greece should its economy implode. Check your pockets/purse/wallet/sock/under the mattress or wherever you keep your money and you’ll find that unless you’re some sort of mental patient that your money is the Euro, that means we’re in the Eurozone and THAT means our government has agreed to help bail out the people of Greece in the event that Greece has a slip up....pardon the pun.

Now, I’ve nothing against the Greeks, I don’t think I’ve ever met a Greek but I’m sure they’re lovely people and I think we can all sympathise with the fact that their economy has gone tits up. However, I don’t see why the taxpayer here should help out another countries tax payer when clearly we have enough trouble managing our own affairs. The bailout will be a loan with “attractive interest rates” which is fine, we’ll get our money back eventually but, eh, we, eh kind of need all our money to help ourcountry....because it’s eh....it’s not doing too good right now.

The EU has been good to Ireland and given us money, I’m not denying that and I don’t think I’d have any objection to helping another country stave off economic collapse if the country could afford it. We’re all mates now and what’s a couple of million between Euro-bro’s, right? The problem is that now we can’t afford it. The shite economy of Greece and the shite economy of Ireland have been constantly compared since “recession” became the hottest buzzword since “property ladder” but now we’re expected to pay millions of Euro we can’t spare to help a country who is only marginally worse off than us. It doesn’t really make sense to me how increasing the deficit of our little country to help another little country solves anything.

While I understand the Greece needs to be stabilised in order to ensure confidence in the Euro and that will make magic happen and then we can all buy decking again I don’t see why we should pay. An argument that comes to mind is “Oh we’re part of a community of nations, one day we’ll need help and Greece will help us” bullshit, I think if we have a government who can’t play a role in actively managing a community of counties then an active role in a community of nations should be shelved, lest Fianna Fail/Greens export their governmental wisdom globally and actually destroy the world. . . .unless that was their plan all along.
